Accommodation in Veinna - Lodging & Hotel Guides
Accommodation in Vienna has all the range of an opera singer: At the top end Vienna has some of the best (and most expensive) hotels in Europe, while lower down the scale you’ll find a good selection of friendly guesthouses and well priced hostels. Vienna is a relatively compact destination and most of the city’s attractions are found in the central district of the Innere Stadt, which is also where you’ll find most of Vienna’s accommodation.
Vienna is a perennially popular destination although crowds thin during the spring months of April and May and the autumnal months of October and November. If you’re planning to visit at any other time, or during one of the festivals, it’s essential that you book ahead. The festival season begins in March with the classical music Spring Festival. The month-long Vienna Festival begins mid-May and features an intriguing series of arts programmes. In the summer months, the main festivals are the KlangBogen Festival, the Opera Film Festival and the International Dance Festival. In October the international spotlight focuses on Vienna for the annual Viennale Film Festival.
Vienna does luxury well, but it comes at a price. The most opulent hotels in the Innere Stadt are arguably the Hotel Imperial (which provides temporary lodgings to various visiting celebrities, politicians and well-heeled travellers) and the Hotel Bristol (straight out of a Habsburg film set).
If you’re travelling on a more modest budget, the Hotel Royal offers great value for money (keep an eye open in the lobby for the piano on which Wagner composed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). Slightly further a field the Pension Altstadt Vienna is another seasoned favourite with guidebook writers. Inside the opulent rooms are crammed with antiques and make for a truly memorable stay.
The ‘Hostelling International’ establishment is a backpackers’ favourite, although there are plenty of decent budget hotels scattered across the city. Another budget option is to arrange a private room through one the city’s tourist offices. If you decide to go down this route you will be expected to stay for a minimum of three nights (and pay a small commission).
