An apartment offers you a degree of independence and flexibility that you won't get in a hotel or resort-complex, plus there are serious savings to be made if you're travelling in a group. However, there are a number of 'potential pitfalls', so keep an eye open for the following:
What you see isn't necessarily what you get: Strategically taken photos and cunningly angled shots might obscure the flyover directly in front of your apartment or the high-rise behind. It's difficult to know what to do about this except to be explicit about your needs. That way you'll have some comeback if you are disappointed with the apartment's location.
Beware of lyrical 'doublespeak': What you're told isn't necessarily the truth, and while it may be a stone's throw from the beach for your athletic estate agent; it might be a hot twenty-minute slog in reality.
Knowledge is power: Do as much research as possible beforehand to make sure that you've chosen the right location. Cypriot towns sun the gamut from sleepy 'retirement villages' to all night party zones and it would be a shame to get stuck in the wrong place. It's also a good idea to find out what services are in the area, including sporting facilities, shops, bars and restaurants.
Check the apartment inventory: It might be the last thing on your mind when you first arrive, but it's a good idea to check that everything that should be there is there; otherwise you could end up out of pocket. Similarly make sure that everything is in good working order (especially electrical appliances) and note any damage in the apartment. Landlords have been known to mistake your deposit for a monthly bonus.
Ask about transport links: Reliance on Cypriot public transport would test the patience of a saint and it is well worth thinking about hiring a car (even if your apartment is in the city centre). Prices are reasonable and you'll find all the major rental agencies represented.
Stay cool: Searing temperatures and cloudless skies can play havoc with your internal thermostat. Air conditioning is a must and access to a swimming pool (or the beach) desirable.
