Croatia Accommodation

The choice of accommodation in Croatia is vast, from regular Croatia Hotels and apartments to campsites, youth hostels and guesthouses. The country has, at any one time, over 900,000 beds available to its visitors; almost half of these are located in private residences with Croatian families, usually on a bed and breakfast basic, and offer excellent value for money for those on a tight budget.

For visitors wishing to indulge a little more during their stay, there is a wide choice of tourist resorts, hotels and apartments to choose from. In fact, over 175,000 of Croatia’s bed capacity is located within a hotel or apartment – 40,000 more than were available thirty years ago. The lion’s share of this type of accommodation is of a good standard, with over half graded as 3 star quality. Nine percent of hotels have been awarded a 4 star rating (an increase of two percent compared to the previous year) and a respectable four percent of Croatia’s hotels have been awarded a luxury 5 star status.

One of the most popular places for tourists to rest their bones after a day spent sightseeing or beach going is the trusty campsite. Offering a low cost and convenient alternative to regular hotels, camping now accounts for over 200,000 of Croatia’s total accommodation capacity.

Most visitors to the country choose accommodation in the resort towns up and down the coast, and it is these areas that have seen the most dramatic rise in tourist figures over the last few years. In 1975, for example, only around 590,000 beds were available in seaside accommodation; last year this figure stood at an impressive 865,000.

Mountain resorts are also seeing a steady increase in available accommodation, with capacity rising by a staggering 38% over the last thirty years. This is probably due to the rising popularity of walking holidays and adventure holidays in and around Croatia’s mountain resorts and national parks.

The major cities across the country also offer a good choice of accommodation, both for holidaymakers and for business visitors. The capital, Zagreb Croatia, has the largest capacity of overnight accommodation in Croatia, with approximately 9,000 beds available at any one time.
