Unfortunately, Croatia's domestic train railway network leaves a fair bit to be desired. Whilst a number of lines run out of Zagreb Croatia to other major cities, there is as yet no network operating to and from the various tourist resorts along the coast.

There is, however, an excellent service between Zagreb Croatia and Split Croatia which utilises the modern 'tilting train', a high tech new passenger carrier that can complete the journey up to three times faster than was previously possible.

It is possible to reach Croatia by train from various neighbouring EU countries. Below is a summary of the various railway services that are available:

To and from Austria
Vienna to Rijeka Croatia takes 2 1/2 hours and runs twice daily
Vienna to Zagreb Croatia journey is approximately 7 hours, frequency varies

To and from Bosnia and Hercegovina
Sarajevo to Zagreb Croatia takes around 9 1/2 hours, runs daily
Sarajevo to Ploce takes 5 hours and runs twice a day
Sarajevo to Osijek journey takes circa 8 1/2 hours, frequency varies

To and from Germany
Munich to Zagreb Croatia (via Salzburg and Ljubjana) will take 9 hours, trains depart three times a day

To and from Hungary
Budapest to Zagreb Croatia journey time is around 7 hours; there are 4 connections per day

To and from Italy
Venice to Zagreb Croatia (via Ljubljana) takes 8 hours, runs daily

To and from Slovenia
Ljubljana to Zagreb Croatia takes just over 2 hours; runs up to 10 times a day
Ljubljana to Rijeka Croatia journey time of approximately 3 hours, there are 4 connections a day

To and from Serbia and Montenegro
Belgrade to Zagreb Croatia will take around 6 hours and runs 5 times daily
