Undoubtedly one of the best known cross channel services P and O ferries were formed in October 2002 from the merging of P and O North Sea ferries and P and O English channel ferries and are now known collectively as P and O ferries.

Founded in 1837 the official title for the company was The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, understandably a bit of a mouthful, and so became shortened to the more manageable P and O. Ever popular with customers and with a brand name that sticks firmly in people's minds, P and O ferries are perhaps the leading current operators in the United Kingdom.

P and O are also a well known transport and logistics company whose quickest growing concern is the creation of container ports around the world.

P and O are one of the most popular choices for crossing the channel and pride themselves on their customer service and friendly staff.

Ferries go from Dover to Calais, Portsmouth to Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg and from Portsmouth to Bilbao. Ferries also go from Hull across the North Sea to Rotterdam and Zebrugge.

The boats are spacious and comfortable with a wide range of amenities to keep you entertained while on board. A typical boat on the Dover to Calais crossing such as The Pride of Canterbury features a club lounge, a Langan's brasserie, bars, cafes, on board shopping areas, bureau de change, and video arcades to keep the kids entertained. Alternatively you can always go out on deck and blow away the cobwebs with a gust or two of salty sea air and catch a glimpse of the famous White Cliffs of Dover.

You'll be there before you know it because crossing times between Dover and Calais are around the seventy five minutes with the check in time at around thirty minutes. Trips from Portsmouth to Cherbourg obviously take longer coming in at around four hours and forty five minutes. Ferries go at regular intervals throughout the day and there are also frequent overnight sailings.

P and O have recently begun to offer a series of mini cruises including shopping and entertainment cruises with trips from Hull to destinations in the Netherlands such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam and the beautiful city of Bruges in Belgium. They also offer a three night cruise to Bilbao in Spain on their luxury vessel, The Pride of Bilbao, which boasts a wide range of facilities including two cinemas, three bars, four restaurants and a swimming pool.

Whether you're going shopping for duty free or are just going on holiday, P and O offer comfort and the reliability that comes with a well established firm and although travelling by ferry is perhaps not the quickest means of transport these days, it does retain its own certain charm.
