Golf in Ireland offers some of the best courses and tours available for the perfect holiday. Golfing in Ireland is best summarised when split into four regions:

First there is the north western region of Ireland which boasts many wonderful links courses; then the midland region, a fine selection of parkland courses; followed by the western region which offers a combination of the two. However it is the south western region that is most famous for its golfing pedigree and that is where we are focusing our review of golf holidays in Ireland.

The weather may not always be comparable to the likes of Spain and Portugal but Ireland makes up for this with the incredible shades of lush green landscapes that the damper climate creates.

An incredible fact about the Emerald Isle is that it boasts more links courses than its more illustrious neighbour, Scotland. In fact one third of all links courses throughout the world are to be found in Ireland.

New courses, particularly inland have given the golf break industry in the country renewed vigour. This trend is supported by the increase in flight operators such as Ryanair and easyJet offering exceptional deals from UK mainland airports. The progress made is illustrated by the fact that Ireland has been invited by the PGA to host the Ryder Cup in the near future.

Many people choose to stay in and around Southern Ireland's capital city, Dublin. The city is in itself a wonderful location for a city break but is also the perfect starting point to travel comfortably to many of the country's leading golf courses.

These include 'Europe's Augusta' at Druids Glen, one of Ireland's most scenic sporting venues and home to Sergio Garcia's first ever professional tour victory in the Irish Open. It has recently been joined by a sister course Druids Heath which boasts one of the world's longest Par 3s; an incredible 275 excellent drive for many local club players!!

Royal Dublin provides a contrast to Druids Glen as it is a traditional Irish links course which provides a real challenge for golfers of all standards

For the real piece de resistance, take a look at Portmarnock Hotel a few miles outside of Dublin. This luxury hotel is surrounded by 180 acres of breathtaking coastal vistas overlooking Dublin Bay and the Islands of Lambay and Eye. It has within its grounds the superb 28 hole Portmarnock Golf Links designed by Bernhard Langer.

Anyone who has visited Ireland to play golf will remember its scenic beauty, world class golf courses and exquisite blend of golf both inland and on the coastal links.
