Patmos offers a good range of holiday accommodation from upmarket hotels with all mod cons to cheap and cheerful domatia. Most hotels and rooms to rent are centred in Skala and the main east coast resorts of Grikou and Kambos. You'll have trouble finding anywhere to stay in the hill top capital Hora, especially during the summer months and the Easter Week celebrations which are among the most important in Greece.

Domatia owners meet passengers off the boats arriving in Skala but don't commit yourself until you've seen the premises. Some of the local accommodation was erected in haste in the 1980s to meet the demands of an increasing number of foreign tourists to the island. It can be extremely bland and basic to say the least.

A good budget option is Pension Sydney in the Netia district north west of the ferry port. You can help yourself to free wine and water from a tank in the vine covered courtyard at this reasonably priced pension run by a family of Greek Australians who also own the nearby Australis Hotel and apartments. The same family manages Villa Knossos, which has good value double and triple rooms set in lovely private gardens.

Hotel Asteri is one of the best in Skala it's a working farm, overlooking the bay, where guests are served home produced honey, eggs and tomatoes for breakfast.

Hokhlakas Bay, on the island's west coast less than half a kilometre from Skala, offers the upmarket 60 room Romeos Hotel which has a swimming pool, kiddies' pool, poolside bar.and the most wonderful sunset views.

Backpackers make a beeline for the beach resort of Meloi, two kilometres north east of Skala, where the well run Stefanos Camp Site has bamboo shaded sites, a café, laundry, shared fridges and grill facilities. You can bring your own tent or rent one. The site minibus meets visitors as they disembark at Skala.

Those with more money to burn check into the swish Porto Scoutari Hotel above the camp site. This is the island's most exclusive address a luxurious bungalow complex arranged around a lovely pool with magnificent sea and island views. It's a favourite spot for honeymooners and anniversary couples who come here to spoil themselves with the hotel's first class facilities which include king size canopied beds, satellite TV and superb American style buffet breakfasts.

Both Kambos, north along the coast from Skala, and Grikou, to the south, have a good supply of hotels, rooms to rent and self catering apartments. Most hotels in Grikou are block booked in summer by the tour operators the hillside Golden Sun Hotel is one of the exceptions or try the Flisvos Taverna which offers both good quality Greek fare and a few fairly basic rooms to rent.

The pick of the bunch at Kambos in terms of facilities is the 40 room Patmos Paradise Hotel perched high above the bay. The spacious air conditioned rooms have private balconies with spectacular sea views. The hotel's extensive range of facilities includes a large pool, tennis and squash courts, a health club, disco, coffee shop and watersports.
