Skiathos Night Life Greece Greek Nightlife

Skiathos Town is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place when the sun goes down with enough bars, restaurants and clubs to suit all tastes. You'll find everything here from boozy Brit bars full of rowdy young package holidaymakers to traditional bouzouki bars and classy jazz and blues clubs.

When it comes to eating out you'll find prices are higher here than on many of the less developed Greek islands and it's not so easy to find good quality, reasonably priced traditional food. The seasonal deluge of tour groups from northern Europe has caused an explosion of not particularly inspiring "pizza and chips" style eateries but there are still opportunities for fine dining and affordable "ouzo and octopus" evenings.

The western section of the waterfront is lined with bars and street cafes which are perfect for early evening people watching over a sundowner. Most of the best restaurants overlook the western end of the bay and are accessed by some steep steps.

One of the most romantic dining spots in town is provided by the elegant Windmill Restaurant which is well worth the climb up to the peak to the east of Agios Nikolaos Church. Exotic French fare is on offer at this converted mill where you can enjoy spectacular views from the terraces. There are nearly two dozen wines to choose from at this evening only restaurant which has a number of vegetarian options along with a mouthwatering array of innovative meat dishes.

If you prefer to "go native" and save yourself some Euros, follow the locals along to To Psaradika a cheap and cheerful ouzeri next to the fish market at the far end of the old harbour waterfront.

The outdoor café on the Bourtzi, the pine clad islet which divides the harbour in two, is a wonderful place to watch the sun go down and the ships pass by. You can't eat here but it's a lovely early evening spot, far removed from the frantic activity of the main street of Papadiamantis.

For late night entertainment head for the streets leading off to the left of Papadiamantis, where most of the music bars and night clubs are located.

Borzoi is the oldest club on the island, full of character with its stone walled interior and attractive garden set round an old olive press. There's a small dance floor and a lively atmosphere, especially after midnight. The music ranges from jazz, blues and rock to Greek and Latin American.

Adagio is a popular gay haunt on Parados Evangelistrias (turn left just before the post office on Papadiamantis). For Greek music head for Stones or Apothiki Music Hall but if you crave the company of beer swilling Brits and Scandinavians you'll be more at home in Polytechniou (better known as Bar Street) or nearby Spartacus.

Late night discos include a trio of clubs at the far eastern end of the harbour Remezzo, Kavos and BBC which attract a young crowd hell bent on dancing till dawn.

Several of the island's hotels have their own discos and organise evening entertainment in the summer months. They include the Skiathos Palace, the Zeus Hotel and Caravos Hotel at Koukounaries Beach on the south coast.

For a more cultural evening, check out the programme of events at the Bourtzi outdoor theatre in Skiathos Town where the Aegean Festival takes place from late June to early October with performances of Greek tragedies, theatre, music and dance.

The Paradiso outdoor cinema on the town's ring road has twice nightly screenings of newly released films shown in their original language.
