Vacation Cottages on Kauai

Kauai's cottages are self contained accommodations which are fully furbished with a kitchen and bathroom.

Rather than being in a huge complex, which is typical of condo setup, cottages tend to be based on private land such as farms or garden estates. Often they are attached to bed and breakfasts or guesthouses. They are less impersonal than the larger complexes or resorts that are dotted around the island, but they may not have access to the same number or quality facilities. On the other hand, what facilities are on offer will not have to be shared with as many other holiday makers.

Typical shared amenities and services include: swimming pool, barbecue area, beach towels, and equipment for various sports or activities. Cottages normally have a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, laundry facilities, TV and VCR. There is usually a minimum stay of three nights and some cottage owners may insist on payment in advance for the entire stay. Kauai's vacation cottages are usually one or two bedroom and can sleep two to six people. They can be rented for very reasonable rates that vary slightly from area to area. Different rates may apply during certain holidays such as Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Cottages are available either on the beach front or further inland in scenic, tropical settings amidst mountains and lush gardens. One of the main factors to consider before booking accommodation is whether you would prefer to be in a more rural setting with access to spectacular scenery and long walks, or a just short stroll away from the beach. Which part of the island would suit you best is another consideration. Beach lovers who are hoping to soak up the sun would probably prefer the south shore with miles of golden beaches and calmer waters. The north shore is famous for its dramatic scenery but sees more rain than the south. The east coast is popular with budget travelers and is the commercial centre of the island. The main airport is at Lihue on the south east corner of the island. The west coast is a slightly cut off from the rest of Kauai as there is no road through to the north but has spectacular attractions such as Waimea Canyon.
