Kauai's Restaurants Dining Guides

Kauai's restaurants are plentiful and diverse. Kauai's population has been swelled by people from different parts of the world so local food is varied. All sorts of cuisine such as North American, Italian, Thai, Mexican, and Japanese are available on the island. Fresh seafood is common mild spices, tropical fruits and coconut are used to flavour Hawaiian food. Eating out in doesn't have to be expensive there are plenty of affordable restaurants and cafés. Listings of places to eat out are given below.

North Coast Dining

Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant, 5144 Kuhio Highway (Highway 56), Hanalei, tel: 1 808 826 6113.
Seafood and steak is served in this restaurant which is located on the banks of the Hanalei River. The tables outside overlooking the river are great for lunch or pre dinner drinks. In addition to the restaurant they have a seafood market which is handy for those with access to a kitchen. The restaurant is open daily 11am 10pm.

Hanalei Gourmet, Kuhio Highway (Highway 56), Hanalei, tel: 1 808 826 2524.
The restaurant still retains its benches and desks as a reminder of its days as Hanalei's schoolhouse. Now it is a trendy bistro with a selection of gourmet sandwiches, exotic salads and oriental foods. In the evenings there is live music. Open Sun Thurs, 8am 10.30pm and Fri Sat, 8am 11.30pm and is middle of the range in terms of price.

La Cascata, Princeville Resort, 5520 Ka Haku Road, tel: 1 808 826 9644.
This top class restaurant serves delicious Mediterranean food made with organic, local ingredients. It is worth trying to arrive before sunset to enjoy the fabulous views. The restaurant is furnished in a Mediterranean style with terracotta floors and vines. Dining at the La Cascata is a real treat but it is not cheap. The restaurant is open daily 6pm 10pm reservations are recommended.

Postcards Café, Kuhio Highway (Highway 560), tel: 1 808 826 1191.
This moderately priced café is mainly vegetarian but seafood is also served. This restaurant presents creative and unusual dishes made from mainly organic food. The emphasis is on eating healthily with fresh fish and locally grown ingredients. It opens from 8am 11am and 6pm 9pm.

East Coast Dining

Barbecue Inn, 2982 Kress Street, Lihue, tel: 1 808 245 2921.
A range of American and Japanese style dishes are served in the moderately priced Barbecue Inn. The steaks and seafood, such as clams, shrimps cooked with coconut, or scallops with nori are particularly good. It has outdoor and indoor tables with spectacular views over Kalapaki Bay.

Caffé Coco, Kuhio Highway (Highway 560), Wailua, tel: 1 808 822 7990.
Try Caffé Coco for unusual gourmet food in a pleasant ambience. The service is unhurried but the food is excellent: vegetarian dishes, health food and Mediterranean style food. They are inventive with their menu and come up with tasty dishes made with exotic ingredients, such as fish with guava sauce, and they have daily specials. They are open Tues Sun, 5pm 9pm, and the food is priced in the middle of the range.

Duke's Canoe Club, Kauai Marriott Resort, 3610 Rice Street, Nawiliwili, tel: 1 808 2469599.
This is a good place to have a cocktail either sitting outside looking over Kalapaki Bay, or sitting indoors with the live Hawaiian music. Consistently good steak and fresh fish are served in the restaurant upstairs. The restaurant is moderately priced and is open 5pm 10pm daily.

Gaylords, Kilohana, Kaumualii Highway, Lihue, tel: 1 808 245 9593.
Classic American and international dishes are served in this top class restaurant in historic, elegant surroundings. The rooms are decorated as though it were still a 1930s plantation estate house. Diners sit on tables arranged round a courtyard with views over hazy mountains and rolling lawns. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, Mon Sat, 11am 3pm and 5pm 9pm, Sun, 9.30am 3pm and 5pm 9pm.

South Coast Dining

Beach House, 5022 Lawai Road, Poipu, tel: 1 808 742 1424.
This is a top class restaurant serving traditional Hawaiian food. The great food and the beachfront location make this a top choice for a meal out. It is worth getting here early to catch views of the sunset over the waves. It is open daily from 5.30pm 9.30pm.

Keoki's Paradise, Poipu Shopping Village, 2360 Kiahuna Plantation Drive, tel: 1 808 742 7534.
Go to Keoki's Paradise for a lively environment with exotic decor in which to enjoy your food. The restaurant was purpose built to create a South Pacific look with sprawling tropical plants, a lagoon and waterfalls. American style food is served here such as ribs, steaks, burgers, salads and sandwiches. There is live music Thursday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoon. It is open daily 11am 12am with the main dining room open evenings only.

Pomodoro, Rainbow Plaza, Kalaheo, tel: 1 808 332 5945.
This is an excellent Italian restaurant with a casual, elegant atmosphere. The food is good and the service is friendly and efficient. This delightful restaurant falls in the middle of the price range and is open daily 5.30pm 10pm.

West Coast Dining

Green Garden, Highway 50, Hanapepe, tel: 1 808 335 5422.
Different styles of local food are served in the Green Garden ranging from traditional Hawaiian to Chinese style food. The Green Garden is popular for its sandwiches and main dishes made with fresh fish. This moderately priced restaurant is open Mon, Wed Sat, 10.30am 2pm and 5pm 9pm, Sun, 7.30am 2pm and 5 9pm.

Toi's Thai Kitchen, Eleele Shopping Center, Eleele, tel: 1 808 335 3111.
This is the place to get delicious Thai food at reasonable prices. There is a good selection of vegetarian dishes. Satay sauces, stir fries, noodles and Thai curries feature on the menu. Dishes can be made with vegetables, meat, fish or tofu. The restaurant is open Mon Sat, 10.30am 2pm and 5.30pm 9.30pm.

Wrangler's Steakhouse, 9852 Kaumualii Highway, Waimea, tel: 1 808 338 1218.
This family run steakhouse serves steak, burgers and pasta at affordable prices. The place combines island traditions with a touch of the Wild West. It is open Mon Thurs, 11am 8.30pm, Fri 11am 9pm and Sat 5pm 9pm.
