The Kauai Sands Hotel

The Kauai Sands Hotel has an oceanfront location next to the Coconut Marketplace on Papaloa Road outside Wailua on the east coast of Kauai. This area of coastline is known as the Coconut Coast and is one of the areas where lower priced accommodation is to be found. It is popular with budget travelers for this reason and also offers access to some of Kauai's main shopping areas.

It is a short distance from the island's main airport at Lihue, making it one of the more accessible tourist destinations on the island. The Coconut Marketplace is a shopping centre built in the 1970s containing shops, restaurants and a small movie theater. The complex has been built in a plantation style to evoke the atmosphere of the original plantation.

The Kauai Sands Hotel boasts two pools, a hot tub, a conference room, a launderette and over 200 rooms. The restaurant, Al Don's, is right next to the ocean and boast an "Americanized" menu. Affordable prices make this hotel popular for package holidays. There are discounts for senior citizens and a variety of packages available. The buildings are old but the rooms are clean but basic and are air conditioned and come with a fridge, coffee machine, cable TV and have disabled access.

The hotel also offers a car rental service which is handy for exploring the coast and attractions located inland, such as hiking along the Nounou Mount Trail, also known as the Sleeping Giant. For those who enjoy hiking, there are other excellent inland hikes providing fantastic views. Activities such as kayaking and snorkeling are also available. If that does not grab you interest then the hotel is within arms reach of the more cosmopolitan activities shopping, fine dinning and entertainment and a bustling nightlife.

Most of the island's population lives on the east coast so it is a good place to meet the locals. As you drive through Wailua it suddenly becomes clear as to why it is often referred to as "the Coconut Coast ". This area was originally a coconut plantation and the many thousands of coconut trees are still very much present. The Sands Hotel is within easy distance of tourist attractions such as the Wailua Boat Cruise which takes you along the river to stunning waterfalls and other local features such as Fern Grotto a fern covered grotto formed from lava rock. For those who are a little more independent and do not wish to go on an organized tour, it is possible to hire canoes or kayaks and explore the river on your own steam. The Wilcox museum is close to the Sandsl as well.
