Gay Ibiza Ibiza

Gay Ibiza the gay scene, the clubs and the bars

Gay Bar

Ibiza has long been recognised as a leading gay destination, due more than anything to its famously liberal reputation. Since the 1960s, when tourism really began to develop on Ibiza, gay people have always been made welcome, and the island has gradually become one of the top gay destinations in Europe. Nowadays, there are plenty of gay bars, restaurants and beaches.

The most important thing about the gay scene in Ibiza is that it is not isolated nor restricted to any specific area. Certainly the hub of the scene on Ibiza is Ibiza Town, with the majority of venues located in the portside Sa Penya area (specifically Carrer de la Verge), and even within the walls of Dalt Vila. But, just south of the capital, the family orientated resort of Figueretes beach is another favourite, and is scattered with gay bars and restaurants.

While San Antonio tends to attract a more heterosexual crowd, the largely straight clubs of the island are becoming more attuned to the consumer power of Ibiza's gay visitors. Amnesia, for instance, the bastion of foam parties, plays host to the weekly La Troya Asesina night, which started in the late 1990s and draws in a mainly gay crowd. The clientele is hip, beautiful and international, and the event is gaining in popularity.

Ibiza's gay club, Anfora (Carrer Sant Carles, within Dalt Vila), has a capacity of only 500 pitiful in comparison to Privilege's 10,000 and is open between May and October. It is a popular little place, elaborately designed and run to cater for all ages and nationalities, and for people of all musical persuasions, from hard house to camp tunes.

When it comes to gay bars, the choice is far less limited. On Carrer d'Alfonso XII the most popular ones are Dôme and Angelo, both open between May and October, and both boasting terraces packed with hipsters and drag queens, and the most chic post bar crawl crowds. Angelo is Ibiza's largest gay bar.

Chiringay, on the nudist beach of Es Cavallet, is health heaven, offering its customers massages and a range of healthy smoothies and juices, in stunning surroundings and against a backdrop of chilled out beats.

While it is true that Ibiza attracts more gay men than gay women, there is one particular lesbian run bar that is a must: Monroe's on Carrer Ramón Mutaner, in Figueretes. The place is essentially a shrine to Marilyn Monroe and is plastered with photos and other knick knacks relating to the screen icon. Monroe's is a fun night out, and even pulls in the families with its frequent cabaret performances.
