Ibiza Beach Bar

Ibiza offers an eclectic mix of bars, ranging from über trendy 'scene' venues to those in the 'cheap and cheerful' tradition. Bar hopping is infinitely cheaper than club hopping, since most bars don't charge entry, and since the majority of clubs only open at midnight, the bars in the main towns of Ibiza and San Antonio aim to lure in the pre club crowd from sunset onwards. The drinks themselves are by no means cheap (or even reasonable), but there are plenty of buy one get one free offers and other drinks deals to tempt you in.

In Ibiza Town (Eivissa), the main bar strip runs along the harbourside of La Marina, from Carrer Lluis Tur i Palau to Carrer Garijo, via Placa Antoni Riquer and Carrer Barcelona. Two of the perennial favourites in Ibiza Town are Rock and Base, which stand beside one another on Carrer Garijo and draw in the most seasoned Ibiza faces. Base is so trendy that it even produces its own CDs. Dome on Carrer Alfonso XII is equally fabulous, and the glamorous post midnight crowd there is definitely up for a good time. Noctambula, on Carrer des Passadis, has DJs playing thumping tunes in the basement and a chillout area upstairs. For something more understated and relaxed, head for Can Pou Bar on Carrer Lluis Tur i Palau.

The disparity between the two different kinds of bar in San Antonio is quite startling. Most of the best and most fashionable bars are grouped on the Sunset Strip, and include Mambo, Savannah and the notorious Café del Mar, all of which play the summer's most popular Balearic anthems during the day and switch to divine chillout as the sun goes down. Bar M (Avgda Dr Fleming), despite not being on the Sunset Strip, is also a trendy pre club venue, owned by Manumission and with its own resident DJ. The other side of San Antonio the infamous West End is another kettle of fish entirely, and is mainly full of Brit packed bars and theme pubs operating on an all you can drink basis.

Fabulous beach bars include Sa Trinxa and Jockey Club on Salines Beach, and Bora Bora on Platja d'en Bossa, all of which play to a tanned and very chilled out crowd.

By far the all round best bar on Ibiza is km5, which is located in the middle of nowhere at the fifth kilometre (km5) of the Ibiza Sant Josep road. Entry is free, and the Moroccan influenced garden and bar restaurant inside are ideal for a less manic night out than any offered by the towns. This is definitely the place to be seen.
