Portinatx Ibiza (Portinax) Spanish Holiday Guide

Portinax Ibiza

Largely due to its location away from the three main towns (Ibiza, San Antonio and Santa Eularia), Portinatx tends not to be overly popular with clubbers. It is a relatively quiet place, and certainly a fantastic place to stay for those who plan to tour around the island by day and come back every evening to a secluded and relaxing base. Known as one of the island's best looking resorts, the hotels and apartment blocks of Portinatx tend to be low rise and whitewashed, and not out of character with the local architecture.

Portinatx has two bays, one of which Port de Portinatx is further divided into two smaller beaches, s'Arenal Gross and s'Arenal Petite, both of which are sandy. The water off Portinatx is very clear and provides excellent conditions for snorkelling and diving, and it is possible to hire equipment for this from Subfari on the Es Portitxol beach at Cala Portinatx (971 333 183). Cala Xarraca, a mainly pebbly beach, is also known for its fine snorkelling conditions, and is just a short way along the coast to the west. To the east lies Cala d'en Serra, again noted for its excellent beach and clear water. The road leading to the latter is rather precarious and unmade, but the journey is worth it for the isolated beauty of the small, sandy bay, and for the peaceful snorkelling it offers.

The Portinatx area is particularly well suited to hiking holidays, with cliffs running along the coast to the lighthouse that overlooks the sea at the most northern point of Ibiza. To the west of the town lies Punta de Xarraca, and the trek from one to the other is said to be one of the most demanding walks on the island, covering 10 kilometres of rocky terrain along the coastal path. Walking along the coastline of Ibiza can be very difficult indeed in the height of summer, but is certainly more advisable than attempting to trek through the hotter inland areas.

Although it is rather small and because it is largely lacking in pubs and bars Portinatx lives up to its reputation as one of Ibiza's loveliest resorts. It was the setting for a few of the scenes in the film South Pacific, and at its best it is easy to see why this Mediterranean resort was considered representative of such an exotic location.
