Chennai Beaches Guide to Marina, Covelong Elliots Beach

Chennai Beaches

Chennai boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in India. These include Covelong Beach, Elliot’s Beach and Marina Beach; all great places to escape the fast pace of the city.

Marina Beach is the most famous of Tamil Nadu, believed to be one of the Worlds largest, stretching a good 12km. A lighthouse can be admired at the south end of the beach and is well worth visiting if you have the chance as it provides great panoramic views of the city. And if you have soaked up enough sun sun bathing on the warm sand, stroll along the road parallel to the beach in search for the many statues of well known Indian leaders and celebrities, in particular the statue of Mahatma Ghandi while browsing the stalls. With the water fountain and generous park space, it is a great place to come with the family or just to get some fresh air.

Covelong Beach, although 40km from the city, is a perfect retreat with palm trees lining the white sand beach. With water sport activities like windsurfing and swimming on offer, it has become a favourite amongst those in search for a beach resort in Tamil Nadu. While the beach is worthwhile by itself, there are also several historical monuments scattered around that adds another dimension to the beach. The Catholic Church is one monument you don’t want to miss.

One of the cleanest beaches in Chennai is Elliot’s Beach. Affectionately known as ‘Bessei’ amongst the locals, this beach is the perfect place to come for a gentle walk though other than that, not much happens here.

So when the city gets a little too much for you, take a trip to one of the beautiful Chennai beaches for a relaxed interlude to your Indian journey.
