To hire a car in Majorca, or indeed anywhere in Spain, you need to be at least 21 years old and to have been driving for at least a year.

You have to show a valid passport and driving licence; there is no need for an international driving licence since most foreign licences (including European Union, US and Canadian) are accepted in Spain. If you have an old style green British licence, which will be harder for the Spanish to understand, you may want to upgrade to the EU standard licence before you travel.

Before allowing you out on the road, the car hire company should give you a bail bond. This is the document you show the police if you are stopped or are involved in an accident.

Payment is usually made by credit card. Some operators will offer variable rates depending on the excess on your policy, and if you are going to be doing a lot of driving you might want to negotiate an unlimited mileage package which, although quite an expensive addition to your car hire fee, could save you a packet in the long run. Drivers under the age of 25 may have to pay a supplement, and a zero excess on any damage to the vehicle will up the price considerably.

There are two main centres to hire a car on the island: Palma in the South, and Soller in the North. Follow the links for more information...
