While flying remains the cheapest way to reach Majorca from the UK, there are plenty of reasons why British tourists might use Majorca ferries. Some will be driving through Europe and will want to put their cars on a ferry and come to the Balearics. Others will be coming from Barcelona or Valencia as foot passengers. And others will be in the Balearics without a car, and use ferries to hop between islands.

You cannot put a hire car on a car ferry service. If you are driving your own car, however, and want to use a ferry, make sure you book well in advance, especially during the summer. The same rule applies if you want to reserve a cabin for one of the overnight crossings.

Ferry frequencies vary by season and you should check websites for latest timings and fares. Majorca ferries generally leave once a day in low season, more frequently in summer. Prices vary according to time of year and whether you reserve a seat.

If you're prepared to sit in a chair, the prices for round trips between Valencia and Palma, Ibiza and Palma and Alcúdia and Ciutadella are roughly similar, in the region of €60 to €90 per person.

Three companies operate ferries to Majorca; plying the routes between the Balearic Islands and to and from mainland Spain.
