Mijas Beaches

Mijas Costa and its adjoining beaches are just 15 minutes drive from the pueblo, with all its old traditions and culture, but down at the seafront you're in a different world. Here all the demands of the modern tourist are pandered to you can jet ski, water ski, parasend or simply sip your sangria at one of the beach bars and top up your tan. The beaches at La Cala are among the best in the province and have consistently won the European Blue Flag for cleanliness.

All the beaches along this section of the Costa del Sol are peppered with "chiringuitos" the beach bars which serve delicious food and local snacks such as the char grilled sardine kebabs and spicy "pil pil" prawns.

To get away from the crowds try the Los Boliches beach adjacent to Fuengirola, favoured more by the local Spaniards than hordes of foreign tourists.

Or head west along the coast to the Costa de la Luz between Cadiz and Tarifa where the beaches are wide, largely empty and flanked by sand dunes. Tarifa, at the southernmost tip of Spain overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar, is known as the windsurfers' city due to its incredibly strong winds which lash this section of the coast throughout the year.

To the east of Mijas Costa the Costa del Sol merges with the Costa Tropical where you'll find charming coves reached by cliff paths. The clear water here makes conditions perfect for snorkelling and diving.

The nearest marina to Mijas is at Fuengirola where you can hire windsurfers, sailing dinghies, jet skis and go fishing and water ski ing.

Local fishing vessels share the marina with luxury yachts. There are plentiful bars and restaurants here so if you're not the sporty type it's a great place to just sit and people watch.

You can charter a boat for the day from the marina office or enjoy an evening cruise on board the Dawn Approach a lovely old sailing vessel based at the end of the main pontoon.

For a great family day out, visit the Mijas Aquatic Park on the Fuengirola ring road. Here you and the kids can enjoy a wonderful water world of kamikaze slides, wild river rides, body ski ing and gentler water based fun and activities. This area's clement climate allows the park to operate daily from the end of April to the end of September. Look out for special entrance offers in the local English newspapers The Entertainer and Sur.
