Spain Guide

Motril Accommodation

Motril has a good range of accommodation types to suit all tastes and budgets from modern, well equipped beachside hotels to small family run "pensiones" and self catering apartments. The resort has not succumbed to the concrete jungle beachfront development which has sprung up along so much of Spain's coastline over the last 30 years. But you'll still find plenty of hotels in and around the town.

The best equipped is the modern five star Gran Hotel overlooking the sea at El Varadero just 20 metres from Poniente beach. The hotel is close to the marina and Los Moriscos golf club and has a good range of facilities including a pool, sauna, coffee shop and restaurants.

In the three star bracket there's the Costa Nevada in Avenida Cuevas, where facilities include a pool, air conditioning, gardens, a disco, restaurants and mini bars.

The Perla de Andalucia is another three star hotel at Calahonda Beach, nine kilometres from the town centre. The hotel has a pool, gardens, coffee shop, satellite TV and air conditioning. Of its 58 double rooms, 16 are geared to the needs of disabled guests.

There are several one, two and three star hotels in the town and along the coast. You'll also find a good selection of hostals which provide clean and comfortable accommodation, usually with en suite facilities and often with excellent restaurants serving home cooked local specialties.

At the cheaper end of the market, Motril also has a number of pensiones where the accommodation is basic and you may have to share a bathroom and toilet with other guests. This is a good way to "go native" because you can't bank on the proprietor speaking English and the accommodation is typically provided within the family home.

There are three local campsites with good facilities and easy access to the beach. The Don Cactus site, on the N340 national coastal road, has a supermarket, bar, restaurant, children's play area and social centre.

Camping Poniente is at the beach of the same name two kilometres from the town. It has bungalows and mobile homes for rent and accepts caravans. There's a wide range of facilities including a bar, restaurant, pool, tennis, laundry and supermarket. The nearby Playa Granada site also has good facilities a bar, grassed areas, laundry and social centre. All three sites are geared to wheelchairs.

Local agents handle the letting of the many self catering apartments and villas which are available in Motril and the surrounding villages. Most of the villas for rent have private or communal swimming pools this makes a great family holiday and can often work out cheaper than a hotel as you normally pay a set price per villa rather than paying per person.
