The glitter of Cannes is not immediately obvious if you arrive by train as the area around the gare SNCF on rue Jean-Jaurès is rather seedy, with more peep shows than famous people. Just a few blocks away from the station, however, you are on rue d'Antibes and well into celebrity-spotting territory.

Further south is the famously ugly Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, east of the old port (vieux port), where the Festival International du Film is held every May. Cannes' hotels book up years in advance for this particular period and so, unless you know someone who knows someone, it is extremely unlikely that you will find a hotel room in Cannes or the surrounding area.

The boulevard de la Croisette is lined with the most famous of Cannes' hotels: the Majestic, Carlton and Noga Hilton are palace-hotel hybrids, full of media princesses and their followers. During the film festival there will be around 7000 important faces and 3000 journalists and paparazzi trying to spot the famous faces, all swarming in this area. Hotel room prices double during July and August in Cannes, but one dreads to think how much of a premium is put on hotel beds during the festival in May.

Even the campsites are expensive in Cannes. There is the Parc Bellevue at 67 avenue Maurice Chevalier in Cannes La-Bocca, five kilometres or so from the centre of town, and you can expect to pay from €12 per night for two people with a car and tent depending on the season. The campsite has an outdoor pool (get there first thing in the morning to avoid crowds of Europe's most annoying children and it is actually quite pleasant), a restaurant with live karaoke and entertainment most nights, and a shop for basic provisions.

In Cannes, hotels that don't cost the earth include the Cybelle at 14 rue du 24 Août (04 93 38 31 33), with basic rooms costing from €30-50 and a popular restaurant on site, and the Chanteclair near the old town at 12 rue Forville (04 93 39 68 88) with value-for-money rooms from €40-60. If you are willing to pay more you get better rooms and facilities at the Provence, 9 rue Molière (04 93 38 44 35) from €80-100.

Obviously, Cannes caters for those with huge budgets and appetites, but it does also have eateries for people not picking up a Palme d'Or at this year's film festival. Aside from the Cybelle's restaurant (see above), other places for a good cheap eat are Au Bec Fin and Le Bouchon d'Objectif (04 93 99 21 76), all serving up menus for under €20.
