The crystal clear waters of Amorgos prompted famous French film director Luc Besson to shoot diving scenes for his cult movie The Big Blue here. If you're not into scuba diving at least pack your mask and snorkel so you can explore the wonderful underwater world which lies off the beautiful beaches and rocky coves dotted around the island's 112 kilometre coastline.

The two ports of Katapola and Aegiali have town beaches protected from the fierce meltemi winds that tend to batter other sections of the coastline. Their harbour sides are lined with bars, cafés and fresh fish tavernas which you won't find on the island's more remote beaches. Some of the prettiest beaches have no facilities at all so make sure you take food and water with you.

Caiques (water taxis) run frequently from the ports to various beaches up and down the coastline in high season and also head out to the islets of Gramvoussa, off the south west tip of Amorgos, and Nikouria which lies just off the west coast. Nikouria was once used as a leper colony but is now uninhabited. It offers some lovely beaches and is a good spot for snorkelling and fishing.

The quiet beach of Agios Panteleimon is the first stop on the caique journey from Katapola followed by beautiful but busy Maltezi where there's a café and sun beds and shades for hire. The next beach south west along the coast is Plakes which is popular with nudists.

From the small hamlet of Kamari, south west of Katapola, there's a path down to the beaches of Notina, Mouros and Poulpodhi (about 20 minutes walk). Mouros is particularly beautiful with calm, clear water through which you can see right down to the sea bed. There are two caves, to the right of the beach, which attract swimmers and snorkellers.

At the south western tip of the island you'll find Kato Kambos - a stunningly beautiful and remote narrow inlet with sandy and rocky beaches and a tiny church by the water's edge. It's an easy walk from the village of Kolofana.

The island's most famous beach is Agia Anna on the east coast below the extraordinary Hozoviotissis monastery. It's a stunning setting, backed by high cliffs and overlooking crystal clear, emerald-blue waters peppered with rocky islets. Small wonder Besson chose this beach and its waters to shoot key scenes for his classic film. The beach gets fairly crowded in high season but nudism is tolerated (somewhat incongruously) in the bay directly below the monastery.

Diving lessons and excursions are available from Dive Ventures based in the northern port of Aegiali. The rich marine life of these waters is a magnet for both divers and fishermen - black fish, lobster, red snapper, sargus, mullet and octopus are among the many species to be found in abundance here.
