Kos offers a good range of holiday accommodation from luxurious hotels and huge resort complexes to cheap and cheerful family-run pensions. But it's not a good idea to arrive here on spec without a reservation as many of the hotels are booked solid by the tour operators in the summer months and are closed in low season.
One of the most popular places to stay in Kos Town is the small family-run Afendoulis Hotel in a quiet location on Evripilou near the sea. Book in advance because the hotel offers excellent value for money and visitors in the know make a beeline for it. The en-suite rooms are beautifully furnished and have large balconies overlooking a flower-filled courtyard. The town centre is just 10 minutes walk away.
A cheaper alternative is the ever-popular Pension Alexis, under the same management as the Afendoulis, at the corner of Irodhotou and Omirou near the Hippocrates Gardens. The spacious rooms have high ceilings and wood floors and most have views of the Castle of the Knights and the harbour. Guests have access to a self-catering kitchen and can enjoy breakfast on a canopied veranda overlooking the pension's private gardens.
Hotel Astron is a well-equipped, quality hotel in Akti Koundourioti right on the harbour. It's open all year round but 65% of the beds are allocated to package holiday groups in high season. The best rooms have harbour views and jacuzzis and all have individual climate control and music channels. The hotel's excellent facilities include a good size swimming pool, a 12-person spa bath, poolside snack bar and children's pool.
Backpackers head three kilometres east of town to the well-run and ever popular Psalidi Camp Site (the only official camping ground on the island). The site has plenty of shade and good facilities including a swimming pool, taverna, minimarket, kitchen, laundry and postal service. Regular buses run to and from Kos Town.
Psalidi has a good stock of hotels of varying standards and boasts the luxurious new Kipriotis Village beach resort which is the place to go for some serious self-indulgence. The resort has been built as a village of two-storey bungalows and apartments and offers every conceivable sport and leisure facility. There are five swimming pools, a state-of-the art health and fitness centre, three restaurants and a full programme of entertainment for adults and children. The hotel has its own disco, hairdresser's, beauty parlour and watersports centre.
The seaside resorts of Tingaki and Marmari on the north coast are also awash with hotels and apartments, many of which cater primarily for British and German package holidaymakers. Mastihari, further west along the coast also has plenty of good quality hotels but is a little more "Greek" than its neighbours and offers some reasonably priced domatia for the benefit of independent travellers.
Kardamena, mid way along the south coast, is the biggest and most frantic holiday resort on the island and its seafront is chock-a-block with hotels, self-catering apartments and holiday complexes.
The magnificent beaches of Kefalos Bay, to the west of Kardamena, are Symilarly flanked by a string of hotels largely geared to the needs of the package holiday market.
Agios Stefanos, at the western end of the bay, is dominated by a huge Club Med complex which offers 328 rooms and a wealth of on-site facilities including two restaurants, plenty of watersports and leisure activities and a children's club.
