The Courtyard Kauai (formerly the Coconut Beach Resort) is on the east coast near Waipouli outside Kapaa. This area is great for shopping and is a centre for commerce. Over time this place has become known as the Coconut Coast, and for a very good reason - in days gone by it used to be a coconut plantation. It is popular with budget travelers and backpackers because accommodation tends to be cheaper this side of the island.
The nearby town of Kapaa is a restored plantation town which had to be rebuilt after being destroyed by a hurricane. This resort lies on 10½ acres of land in front of Waipouli Beach behind the Coconut Marketplace which is a shopping arcade laid out and decorated in old-plantation style.
The resort was sold in 2003 and is just undergone tremendous renovations. The rooms are large and are decorated in a truly traditional Hawaiian style and come with their own lanais (balcony or verandah areas), TV with VCR, fridge, coffee maker, safe and dataport. The main attraction that the former Coconut Beach Resort is known for are its enticing luaus (Tihati's Hiva Pasefika Luau) which are staged five nights a week. These are not to be missed if you want a true taste of Hawaiian hospitality.
There is a restaurant, the Voyager Grille, which holds themed buffets. The nearest beach, Waipouli Beach, is pretty but unfortunately not great for swimming. However just north of this beach there is Waipouli Beach Park which is a safer place for children to swim. Additional amenities provided by the Courtyard Kauai include a bar, children's program during the summer months, car rental desk, babysitting services and a Jacuzzi. Equipment for water sports can be rented out. Free tennis is offered on three championship-level courts. Other facilities include tried and tested wedding services, an open-air lounge, shuffleboard, spa, and a frequented jogging path.
The resort is in a great location next to the shops and restaurants, and there is a golf course nearby. The resort is only ten minutes away from the island's main airport at Lihue. It is within easy reach of the nearby attractions of Fern Grotto and Opaekaa Falls. Kauai's waterfalls are spectacular and Opaekaa Falls is no exception. Fern Grotto is a lava rock formation covered with ferns accessible from the Wailua River. Scheduled boat tours are available or it is possible to hire kayaks for a more independent exploration of the river.
