Map of Kauai - Road and Travel Guide

The map below is a map of Kauai that shows some of the islands more popular destinations. Each destination has a specific page dedicated to them (please see "Places to Visit" on the left hand menu).

You will get much more out of your stay in on the island with a map to show you how to get around and where the main attractions on the island are. Kauai is not a large island - it takes about an hour and a half to drive from one side to the other. Reservations can be made in advance with car rental companies and cars can be picked up from opposite the main airport at Lihue. There are main roads that go around the island - the interior is very mountainous so there are no roads directly across the centre. There is no road across the northwest corner joining the north shore to the west coast. The terrain in this part of the island is rugged but beautiful and mainly impenetrable by foot. This area is known as the Na Pali coast and can be viewed from the sea or from one of Kauai's helicopter tours.

Starting from Kee Beach at the northern edge of Na Pali coast the main road goes along the edge of the northern shoreline past Hanalei Bay and through the small town of Hanalei. The Kuhio Highway (Highway 56) continues on to Princeville and through Kilauea, where you can stop to visit the lighthouse and the bird sanctuary. The road turns south after Kilauea towards Kapaa on the Coconut Coast. This part of the east coast is referred to as the Coconut Coast because it used to be a coconut plantation and still has plenty of coconut trees to prove it. The road becomes Kapule Highway (Highway 51) just before it reaches Lihue, where the island's main airport is located. Following the roads round on a map of Kauai you can see Kaumualii Highway (Highway 50) continuing across the south part of the island to Hanapepe. Turn left off the main highway after Lihue onto Maluhia Road (Highway 520) to get to the beach resort of Poipu on the south coast. Kaumualii Highway stops at Waimea at the other side of the Na Pali Coast. To get to Waimea Canyon, take the Waimea Canyon Road (Highway 550) or Kokee Road (Highway 55).

Road maps

Road maps are published in a free publication for visitors to Hawaii called 'This Week Magazine' which is available on Kauai. These are clear and simple and are a useful guide to the main roads and main landmarks in Kauai. The University of Hawaii Press (1 888 847 7737) produces maps which are updated regularly and include roads, tourist attractions, beaches, hiking trails and large-scale insets of town centres.

Other

The Hawaii Geographic Society (1 808 538 3952) produces maps showing the topography of Kauai which can be useful for hikers.
