If its a Visual Route that you're after, you simply cannot go wrong with Lemosho. Like the Shira Route, the Lemosho ascent of Kilimanjaro offers some of the most untouched and breathtaking scenery imaginable. The Lemosho Trail begins on the Western side of Kili at Londorossi Gate at an altitude of 6890 feet. Initially a relatively gentle path through the leafy forests of the Great Mountain, the route becomes gradually steeper before finally fusing with the Machame Route at Shira Camp.
After a short drive from Moshi to Londorossi, hikers will set-off for Mti Mkubwas Camp at an altitude of 9022 feet. The early section of the trail passes through the forests of the Lemosho Glades, which are teeming with big game such as the renowned African Elephant. Many groups opt for a game ranger to accompany them on this early leg of the journey so as to avoid any unpleasant close encounters.
After spending a relaxing evening at Mti Mkubwas Camp, it will once again be time to hit the road and head for the next campsite on the Shira Plateau. En route, hikers will be able to experience a wealth of ever changing surroundings- from giant green Rain Forests, to grassy plains, to moorland dotted with oversized shrubs. Upon reaching Shira Camp at a height of 12 598 feet, climbers will be able to witness some of the most varied and dramatic scenery present on Kilimanjaro. From the impressive Western Breach in the east to the striking Shira Ridge in the west, the views from the campsite are nothing short of spectacular whichever direction one looks in.
At Shira Hut, climbers on the Lemosho Trail will merge with those on the Machame Trail and thereafter follow the Machame Route, hopefully all the way to summit of Kili. This challenging second leg of the journey involves crossing the Great Barranco Valley, scaling the striking Barranco wall and descending steeply into the Karanga Valley. All this will occur in preparation for the ultimate challenge- conquering Uhuru Peak and cresting the Rooftop of Africa!
