The hotels on the coast are usually more expensive all-inclusive resorts, where the price includes food, sometimes drinks, and activities such as golf or tennis.
Coastal Hotels
One of the advantages of a coastal all-inclusive resort is that you can get a lot for your money: meals in good restaurants, use of a beach and watersports, for example. However, a disadvantage is that these places tend to be rather isolated; it might take ten to twenty minutes to reach the town centre in a taxi. Because of this, and because of the fact that food is included in the price, you might be tempted not to bother sampling the local nightlife and cuisine. However, if your priority is having a good time on the beach, trying different watersports and relaxing, this won't be a problem.
Central Cozumel Accommodation
As for the central Cozumel hotels, one advantage of staying in town is that you will usually pay less for accommodation. You also get to sample plenty of different restaurants instead of being tied to one or two resort restaurants, and you're closer to the nightlife. However, staying somewhere central means that you're more likely to fall asleep listening to people and traffic than to the lapping of waves against the shore. But if you're planning to party until dawn, and skip the early nights, the noise outside will be less of an issue.
Prices of Cozumel hotels
Prices at an all-inclusive resort hotel usually vary from around $100 per person per night to around $300. If you're paying $100 or more, all rooms should have air-conditioning, satellite television and a hair dryer as minimum facilities. For around $200 in high season, you should get an ocean view (or an equally good view), a choice of restaurants, activities such as golf and a swimming pool. You should also get in-room facilities such as a fridge, a coffee-maker and a safe. If you're paying more than $250, you should be able to get a balcony with its own Jacuzzi. Off-peak, you should be able to pay less for these facilities. Caribe Blue in the Costera Sur area charges between $75 and $100 per person per night for a double room. For that price, you get an ocean view and a private balcony or patio.
At the lower end of the market, expect to pay between $45 and $90 for a central hotel with a swimming pool. You won't find anywhere for less than $20 per person per night, but it is possible to find clean, comfortable accommodation near the town centre for around $30. The cheaper hotels don't include food (except occasionally breakfast) in their prices. See our page on cheap hotels in Cozumel Mexico for more information. All hotels charge a singles supplement for people occupying rooms on their own.
More about Cozumel hotels
Most Cozumel hotels, including the town centre ones, have an arrangement with a diving shop to offer dive packages. These can work out as good value, but you should still shop around to see if you can get a better deal by organizing your own diving. If you organize your own, check whether or not the dive operator will pick you up from your hotel. See our page on Cozumel diving for more information.
