Hawaiian's invented surfing. It is as traditional to them as Luaus and Hula skirts. So it would seem only natural that while on your visit to Oahu you should at least try your hand (and balance) at the sport that captured the world's imagination. Surfing will be an experience to remember and brag about for the rest of your life.

Hawaiians called surfing "he'e nalu," which literally translates to "wave sliding." Oahu's ancient legends tell of young men frivolously wasting all their time catching waves, rather then fulfilling their duties. Not much has changed over the years. Surfing was popularized in the early twentieth century, introduced to the rest of the world by champion Olympic swimmer, Duke Kahanamoku. The Duke toured the world wowing audiences with his skill in the water with a 16 foot surfboard. The craze caught on, and soon people were surfing all over the world, but Hawaii will always be the surfers "Mecca".

Oahu has nearly twice as many surfing sites as the other islands. In winter, the North Shore of Oahu gets Hawaii's best surf with swells reaching 30ft. With famous surf sites as the Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay; North Shore is home to some of the world's top surfing competitions such as the renowned Triple Crown of Surfing Championships. However, surfing these legendary sites is strictly for professionals, as conditions are considered very dangerous. Whatever your experience may be at home; be sure you are up to the challenge of Oahu's surfing by first trying some of the less infamous surfing spots.

During the summer months, the best surf moves to the south, with Waikiki and Diamond Head have some of the best breaks. If you have never attempted to surf before, now is the time to start. There are many 'surfing schools' located around Oahu. The Haleiwa Surf Centre on the North Shore offers free surfing lessons from 9 to 11 am on weekends from September to April. Surfboards are provided, so all you need to bring is your swimsuit and lots of enthusiasm.

Concession stands are available at Kuhio Beach Park at Waikiki, where you can rent surf boards and partake in surfing lessons at reasonable prices. There are many other commercial surfing schools and shops all over Oahu that cater for all surfers, from the beginner to the pro.
