Whistler Ski Vacations - Whistler & Blackcomb reviewed
The area known as Whistler is actually two resorts rolled in to one. Whistler and Blackcomb (known universally simply as Whistler) is widely regarded as being North America’s number one ski resort. It is situated in the British Columbian mountains and whichever magazine or website you read, it will always get rave reviews.
It is difficult to disagree with this assessment, and you will find nothing but positive remarks through this critique. So what does make a Whistler ski vacation so good?
Whistler is perfect for skiing, both on and off piste and at whatever level. It is sometimes suggested that the more widely acclaimed resorts sometimes overlook the needs of the first time skier but this is certainly not the case when looking at Whistler. Its excellent ski school with over one hundred instructors only tells half the story.
Over the centuries, what can only be described as ‘bowls’ have been created which means novice skiers can easily roll up and down these to gain confidence, and can quickly improve their technique without the fear of losing control or, worse still, going over the edge of a mountain! This plus point is only accentuated by the excellent powder snow.
There are over seven thousand acres of piste and currently thirty-three lifts. Whistler is what is known as a ' snow-sure resort' thanks to the three large glaciers and numerous snow cannons. It is traffic free, making strolling around the streets, looking in shops, drinking in bars and eating in restaurants is a simple, safe and enjoyable experience.
If you can bear to leave the spectacular alpine scenery behind, it is worth attending a local ice hockey match. A fast and furious game, it provides a great contrast to the tranquillity and beauty of the slopes.
The nearest airport to Whistler is Vancouver, and the transfer time is two and a half hours. Working in a day visit to Vancouver is also very worthwhile, perhaps right at the beginning or at the very end of your vacation.
Whistler has a range of hotels and chalets, and you virtually cannot go wrong whichever you choose. However, like with any ski resort, it is worth shopping around to secure the best deals.
