Lloret de Mar Car Hire - Getting around

Lloret de Mar Holiday Travel Guide & Vacations - Lloret de Mar Beaches - Lloret de Mar Apartment Accommodation & Hotel Lodgings - Lloret de Mar Tourist Attractions & Things to do - Lloret de Mar Nightlife & Restaurants

Lloret is a self-contained resort and as long as your accommodation is near the town and main beachfront you'll find all the necessary entertainment and leisure facilities on your doorstep. Regular bus services connect the coastal towns of this area and serve the local adventure parks. Your tour rep will be able to organise transport to and from the region's most popular tourist destinations.

But you may decide to hire a car for some or all of your holiday so you can explore the local sights at your leisure and discover some of the unspoilt stretches of coastline and the beautiful mountainous hinterland.

There are small sheltered coves and pretty unspoilt fishing villages which have been virtually untouched by tourism. And inland you'll find villages where life seems hardly to have changed for hundreds of years.

Explore the "cava" (Spanish champagne) region of Sant Sadurni to the west of Barcelona. And take a day to tour Barcelona itself with its many wonderful treasures including the fabulous Gaudi architecture, the street markets and cafes of Las Ramblas and the Picasso Museum. Be prepared for traffic chaos and parking problems though.

The Universal Studios Port Aventura theme park is 150 kilometres south of Lloret near Tarragona. This Disney-style adventure park is famous for its terrifying Dragon Khan roller coaster (with its eight loop-the-loops) and makes a great family day out with masses of thrill rides and live entertainment.

Local hotels, travel agents and car hire firms all supply rental cars but if you're holidaying in high season make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment. You'll be more comfortable with air conditioning if you're travelling in July or August.

These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself before choosing your car hire company:

  • If you've booked the car to be waiting for you on arrival, you'll want to know if the company will arrange for a representative to meet you. There's nothing worse than arriving in the middle of the night to find no car.and no-one to complain to! Or will they deliver the car to your hotel with no extra charge?
  • Does the company give a commitment on the quality of its cars - are they, for example, all under a certain age?
  • Will you have to pay the local IVA tax (Spanish VAT) of 17.5% or is it included in the price?
  • Does the company offer "no quibble" insurance to cover such things as collision damage and theft? Is unlimited third party insurance and basic personal accident damage for the driver and occupants included?
  • Will you have to pay an "excess" charge in the event of an accident?

For just popping around Lloret and the local area you may decide to go for a motorbike or scooter. Many car hire firms provide these and there are also dedicated companies solely dealing in scooter hire. Quad bikes, mountain bikes and ordinary push bikes are also available for hire.
