Pablo Picasso spent a sizeable amount in time in Barcelona and the Museu Picasso is devoted to showcasing his life and work. Although the collection cannot be called extensive, there are a number of earlier pieces and quite a lot of personal information about the artist. Stop by to view pieces from Picasso's famed Blue Period like ' The Defenseless' and his later study of Velazquez's 'Las Meninas. ' The museum itself is comprised of five amazing Gothic palaces in Barcelona's Ciutat Vella or Old Town area. Located at Carrer de Montcada 15-19, Tel +34 93 31 963 10.
The aptly-named Fundació Joan Miró is devoted to the work of Spanish artist Joan Miró, making it a must-see in any Barcelona travel guide. Born in 1893, Miró is one of Barcelona's most beloved sons and visitors can still feel love for an artist the city buried in 1983 with all the pomp and circumstance of a state affair. Celebrated for his playfully avant-garde approach to art, Miró was primarily recognized for his use of bold blocks of primary colour and geometric black lines. Visit the Fundació Joan Miró, itself a gem of light, airy modern architecture, to view over 11,000 pieces of work. Located at Avenida Miramar, 71, in the Parc de Montjuïc. Tel +34 93 44 394 70.
Barcelona is a city dedicated to the architecture of Antoni Gaudí; his work is preserved everywhere fro m the rising spires of Sagrada Familia to the mosaic dragon in Park Güell. Today the Gaudí Casa-Museu keeps appreciation for the architect alive. Situated in the pink fairy-tale house where the artist spent the last 20 years of his life (from 1906 to 1926), the Gaudí museum houses a collection of furniture he designed and drawings he drew. The museum is located off La Rambla and the Raval, in the Parc Güell. Tel +34 93 21 938 11.
If you're interested in Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Romanesque art from the 11th through the 18th centuries, any Barcelona travel guide will recommend a visit to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). Set in the Palau Nacional, which overlooks the famous fountains of Montjuïc, the museum is located in the Parc de Montjuïc, Tel +34 93 622 03 76. The MNAC is really two museums in one; in 1991 the MNAC joined with the Museu d'Art Modern, to offer visitors a selection of 19th and 20th century art along with Departments devoted to Photography and Drawings and Prints, the Gabinet Numismàtic de Catalunya (which focuses on coins and medals) and the Biblioteca General d'Història de l'Art or library of art history.
