Trinity College and Grafton Street
Struggle out of bed and make your way to the revamped Dublin institution, Bewley's Café on Grafton Street for a slap-up breakfast that will kick start your day. Ramble down to Trinity College, the city's oldest centre of learning, for a stroll around the campus and if the queue isn't too long, a look at the famous 9th -century Book of Kells and the magnificent Long Room.
Dublin Castel and St Patrick's
From here make your way up to Dublin Castle for a quick mooch around the grounds, or if you've got more time, a visit to the incredible Chester Beatty Library, home to a breathtaking collection of Islamic and east-Asian art. Just across the road is imposing Christchurch Cathedral and an exhibition on medieval Dublin, Dublinia.
Dublin Pubs - Brazen Head, Guinness Storehouse
Hot foot it down the hill to the Brazen Head, Ireland's oldest pub, for what is arguably the best pub lunch in town. From here it's a short walk up Thomas Street to the brick warehouses and cobbled lanes of the Guinness empire. A trip to the Guinness Storehouse fills you in on the history of the black stuff and gives a glimpse of the brewing process. Before you leave make your way to the Gravity Bar at the top of the building for a 360-view of the city and the best pint in town.
Ramble back towards the city centre to Temple Bar and pick up a snack at the organic food market or a dusty tome from the second-hand book stalls. Nip into the Gallery of Photography for a mid-afternoon spot of culture and then retire to The Globe on George's Street for a sultry jazz session.
When you're well rested continue your Dublin break by wandering round the corner to the Victorian Stag's Head, one of Dublin's most famous pubs, for a pre-prandial pint. Then nip across the road to Odessa, a hip hang-out for the young and beautiful where you can lounge on the deep velvet sofas, play backgammon, quaff cocktails and get some of the best nosh in town.
If you can pull yourself away, or don't get an invite to the members' area upstairs, try heading just round the corner to Spy, a vaulted club with a heavy emphasis on dancing and drinking - or, if you can make it past the doormen and into the VIP area - schmoozing with minor celebs and the rich and beautiful.
